Shepherd’s Pie originated from England and is made with a layer of minced lamb topped with a generous layer of creamy mashed potatoes. You can add in lots of veggies along with the meat to make it healthier. This comfort food is delicious and easy to make. Substitute the minced lamb with some minced beef and you get a Cottage Pie. This savoury pie is quite filling and a must try dinner recipe.

Classic Shepherd's Pie

Ingredients
- For Meat Filling Minced Lamb: 500 gm
- For Mashed Potatoes Potato: 500 gm
Onion: 2
Garlic: 8-10 cloves
Carrots: 2
Celery: 1 stalk
Leek: 1 stalk
Salt: 1 tsp
Pepper: 1/2 tsp
Rosemary: 1 tsp
Thyme: 1 tsp
Flour: 1 tbsp
Water: 1/2 cup
Tomato paste: 1 tbsp
Worcestershire sauce: 1 tbsp
Butter: 2 tbsp
Egg yolk: 1
Cream: 100 ml
Salt: 1 tsp
Pepper: 1/2 tsp
Cheese: 1 cube (grated)
Directions
- Step 1 For the Meat filling, chop the onions, garlic, carrots, celery and leek.
- Step 2 In a pan, add some oil and saute the onions and garlic for a minute.
- Step 3 Next, add in the chopped carrots, celery and leek and saute for 2 minutes.
- Step 4 Add in the minced lamb and cook for about 5 minutes until the raw meat colour fades away.
- Step 5 Next, add in the tomato sauce and Worcestershire sauce and mix well to combine.
- Step 6 Add in the flour and mix. To this add half cup of water (use vegetable or chicken broth instead, if available) and let it simmer until there is very little water visible.
- Step 7 To make the potato mash, boil the potatoes until a fork inserted comes out easily.
- Step 8 Peel off the skin and mash the potatoes till the become lump free and creamy in texture.( Pass the mash through a sieve for ultra creamy mashed potatoes)
- Step 9 Add in the softened butter, cream and egg yolk and mix well to combine.
- Step 10 Next add in some grated cheese and season with some salt and pepper. Mix well.
- Step 11 In a dish, first add the layer of meat and vegetable mixture. Top this with a generous layer of mashed potatoes. Smooth the top and carve in some designs or leave it as such for a rustic looking top.
- Step 12 Bake at 200°C for 20 minutes.The top will turn slightly golden.
- Step 13 Garnish with some chopped parsley and your Shepherd’s Pie is ready to dig in!! Enjoy!!
